Why does Airtag precision finding only works at close range?

Very disappointed in precise finding, it only works when it’s within a few feet (3 for mine). Not long enough range for precision finding when you’re looking for your child. 50 ft would be ideal to start tracking in precision mode and should auto switch to that mode when in range. Anyone getting any better range with precision finding?

Yep, I would have never gotten that from your post, but thanks for clarifying that.

As you may already know Precision Finding relies on the U1 Ultra Wideband.

The expected range for Precision Finding to work effectively is generally 10–15 meters (33–50 feet) in ideal conditions. However, this range can vary depending on a number of factors.

  • It the AirTag is indoors, walls, furniture, or other barriers can reduce the effective range of the Ultra Wideband signal. If outdoors, and should the tag be "buried," the range can be severely reduced.
  • Other wireless signals, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or devices using similar frequencies, might impact Precision Finding's accuracy.
  • Outdoors, where there's a clear line of sight, the range can be closer to the upper limit. Indoors, with obstructions, the range might be less.
  • The AirTag's battery health can influence its ability to communicate effectively. As you can imagine, the lower the battery level, the shorter the range.

AFAIK, her sharing this AirTag with you should not affect the Precision Finding range of her iPhone ... but, I have to agree, 3 feet seems to be very poor.

Thanks for the info! Reflecting on your information specifically the comment about signal loss if buried the answer clicked immediately. I had made a necklace with the AirTag and had encased it in one of those thick waterproof AirTag protectors which totally encased it. Much better precision signal now without the protective case. Needless to say I will be getting these for any belkin case that is the outer ring only and forget about the waterproofing. Thanks so much!!!

You're very welcome!

One thing to note. The white plastic side of an Apple AirTag should not be blocked, as it houses the Bluetooth antenna and other communication components. This side is crucial for the AirTag to send and receive signals effectively, whether for location tracking, Find My network communication, or proximity alerts.
