I am looking at my AirTag on find my app but it is show it over a 1/4 of a mile from where it is. is this posable.

An AirTag has no idea where it is located.
It’s beacon only transmits “I’m here” intermittantly. (on the order of once every several minutes)
What is actually shown in FindMy is the position of the device detecting the beacon and reporting it’s OWN position as the position of the AirTag.
How that particular device might have determined it’s own position at the point time it was making the “AirTag Found” report is unknown.

The 100’ is a pretty good rule for tag detection distance.
BUT the device detecting your AirTag has an error in it’s own position.
The device reports where it “thinks” it is, not knowing any better.
Analogy:
After a long work week on the road, you and your car are both in Phoenix.
In your sleep-deprived state, you post online that you’re in Tucson.
Everyone who uses the info contained in that online post thinks that your car is in Tucson.
This is because YOU had “Geolocation Error” when reporting your position in your post.
What you’ve observed is not exactly common, but it’s not an indication of a problem
If your AirTag is being reported … it’s working properly.
You have no control over the geolocation accuracy of the device reporting your AirTag’s position.
I was under the understanding that what ever device is picking up my AirTag would have to be less than 100 ft or so from it. so i would say i was being misinformed as to where my air tag really is because if it really works at a range of 1/4 of a mile that would be a really big area to try to find your air tag.
ok i just thought it worked on the same principle of when u send your location to some one from you phone.
i didn't realize it have something to do with posting and stuff. Guess i should have went with a gps chip cus air tag seems to be maybe it will find it maybe it wont. thanks for the help.
AirTags are not a universal geolocation solution.
And FWIW, I’ve used a set of 4 AirTags around the World for 4x years and have never seen an error of the magnitude you’ve reported.
But IMO they work amazingly well for a device the size of a button that will run on tiny battery for a full year and only cost abt $25.
Let me say it a different way. My air tag is being picked up by a device in one place but am being told my AirTag is still where i left it over 1/4 of a mile away from there.
