Latest version of macOS Monterey 12.7.6 not available on App Store

Hi, I live in Italy where unfortunately Apple did not set up a local Apple community. I would like to create a bootable USB installer of the latest version of macOS Monterey, i.e. 12.7.6 but when I try to unload it from my App Store, the download window asks me to confirm if I want to download 'macOS Monterey 12.7.4'.

Of course this wouldn't be a problem if I were to install it on a new drive, I would just update this version following the instalment. However, if I try to re-install it on a drive that already has the updated version, i.e. 12.7.6, of course the installer will warn me that it cannot downgrade.

Is there a particular reason why Apple has not made the latest version available on the App Store?

Thank you

You can try deleting the Software Update .plist preference file followed by rebooting the system to see if that will allow the system to pull the correct information from Apple since macOS should create a new default file & update it. I did this once for one of my organization's Macs and it made the problem worse where it didn't pull any information when using the command line to list the full installers. The Software Update preference file is located:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist

Have you tried to use those commands while booted into Safe Mode?

Do you have access to another Mac that is compatible with Monterey to attempt to download the 12.7.6 installer?

Another option would be to install macOS to a new APFS volume (assuming you have at least 80GB+ of Free storage space), or to an external USB3 SSD. Then boot from the new clean OS on that volume/drive to see if you can download the 12.7.6 installer using one of the methods already suggested.

Otherwise, like @John Galt said, you will probably need to have Apple examine the computer first hand. Some things are just too difficult to troubleshoot in a forum setting and requires being able to see everything first hand.

Within that linked article is a link to another article that has links to various macOS installers. See if the Monterey link in that article will give you the 12.7.1 installer. Here is a direct link to the Apple article which has links to various versions of macOS:

How to download and install macOS - Apple Support

If that still does not give you the proper installer, then try using the Terminal with the following commands....the first will check to see which installers are available for your computer while the second is the command to download a specific version of macOS installer....you need to use one of the valid version numbers from the previous command:

softwareupdate --list-full-installers

softwareupdate -d --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version <version-number>

For macOS 12.7.1, the last command would be:

softwareupdate -d --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 12.7.1

If none of this works, then try rebooting the computer. I know when Sequoia was first released none of my computers would show the most recent versions or even download them. It was a month later when my laptops finally were able to list all of the available versions & allow a download using the command line. Sometimes these Macs just get into a state where they won't properly see the update....or it could be an Apple issue (or both).

Thanks, I already tried all those links and the terminal commands before and only the old version was available. The fetch-full-installer command for the 12.7.6 version resulted in no version found and there is only the old Monterey 12.7.4 version in the list-full-installers terminal command.

FWIW. the Terminal commands work for me.

Thanks, but I know how to create a bootable USB installer, that's not the problem. As I explained, the latest version of Monterey, i.e. 12.7.6 is not available from Apple. It is only possible to download the old 12.7.4 version, which is fine, albeit absurd, if you have to install it on a virgin drive, and then you can update to the latest version. However, if you need to re-install Monterey over the latest version, the installer with the older version cannot downgrade. Hence, my question.

I understand what you want to do, but I have no way to know which Monterey version would appear for you in Italy. Since you determined it is outdated I can only surmise Apple has not made a subsequent, localized version. My attempts to download the version available to you resulted in "not available in the US App Store" or words to that effect, which was not surprising.

Contact Apple.

I already have the latest version of Monterey 12.7.6 on my mac, as I already explained, I need to download the installer to create a bootable USB installer.

Thanks. I tried both of your suggestions, but unfortunately it didn't work. I contacted Apple Italia Support and they weren't aware of this issue. They also replied that availability by country and region depends on the terms and conditions of the relevant country and suggested that I contact Product Feedback for a possible solution.
