Is this “Apple Pencil” fake?

I bought this Apple Pencil 2nd gen off of eBay as a Christmas gift for someone, and it arrived in the mail yesterday. The eBay seller had 100% positive feedback, so I felt pretty confident that it would be a genuine Apple Pencil like they claimed. However, when I attached it to my iPad Air 4th gen, it showed the Apple Pencil animation but did not show a battery percentage. It just sat there and pulsed for about 10 seconds. It does not show up in the About section of settings either. I also noticed it has this cap at the top of the pen that I can pull off and see the battery. Is this genuine?

Apple no longer sells the Apple Pencil 2 so the issue may not be that it is a fake, but that it has never been charged and the battery is now incapable of charging. This is a known issue with rechargeable lithium batteries.

If you enter the pencil's serial number at the following link, you may be able to verify it authenticity ... but, be aware that serial numbers can be faked as well: Check Coverage

The following article will give you an idea of what the actual pencil looks like.
