External Monitor Issue After macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 Update

Hi everyone,

After updating my MacBook Air M2 to macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, I’ve encountered an issue with my external monitor. I connect my ViewSonic monitor via an HDMI-to-Type-C cable. The monitor works for about 5 seconds after being connected, then the screen goes black.

Interestingly, the monitor is still detected in the display settings, and I can even move the cursor into the display area—but nothing is visible on the screen.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far without success:

  • Adjusting the resolution and refresh rate.
  • Booting in Safe Mode.
  • Resetting display profiles.
  • Rebooting the system.

To rule out hardware issues, I tested the same setup on my MacBook Air M1. Before the update to macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, it worked perfectly. After updating, the same problem occurred.

However, I tried connecting to a Samsung external monitor, and that worked fine.

Has anyone else faced similar issues or found a solution? I’d appreciate any guidance or suggestions.

Thanks!

Hi all,

Last week I updated macOS to version 15.6 (24G84) and it seems that Apple has finally solved the issue with my monitor (Dell P2721Q).

I’ve been using it every day and the monitor hasn’t flickered yet.

It’s quite frustrating that it took more than eight months to get this issue resolved, and there’s still no RCA or any explanation for the problem, even though I had an open ticket with them through AppleCare+. Their last message to me, over two months ago, was that they didn’t know what was going on and that I would have to wait.

During this time, I tried multiple versions (including unstable ones), sent the machine to Apple for more than a week, and spent a couple of dollars on new cables and adapters.

I really hope that the issue does not appear again in a future release.

The 15.2 update did not fix this issue for me. I only accepted the 15.1.1 update because I had a different issue related to iCloud synchronization of contact labels and Apple support insisted that I update to Sequoia. Now I have a new issue with my monitor while my original contact synch issue remains unresolved as well. Super cool!

Sequoia has washed out my colors. They are so light, that anything white isn’t invisible including boxes that need to be checked. I can do a search for white underwear and barely see anything. My MacBook Air is 2022 so I got a new M3 for Christmas same thing! So disappointed in Apple. I been a Mac user for 20 years.

Is this on the internal display or external? If it is on the internal display, then your problem is completely different from what is being discussed in this thread. You should start a new thread and give details about your system, including an Etrecheck report. FWIW, I do NOT see these washed out colors in any of three macs running Sequoia (one Intel, one M1 and one M4 Pro), and this is the first I have heard of this. The fact that it happens in two macs of yours suggests that you may have migrated whatever was causing the problem from old to new.

Same problem here. Sequoia 15.2. Went straight to Sequoia 15.2 from Sonoma, which was working fine.

Three Dell U3223QE displays connected to M1 Max Mac Studio, all via USB-C to USB-C. Two of the displays are fine. The third exhibits the problem described here. Sometimes the screen goes black every few minutes. Sometimes it's stable for many hours. Windows never move positions and it is always restored within a few seconds. Not a showstopper, but definitely a consistent workflow annoyance.

Come on!!!!!!! This is SO frustrating.

  • I've tried all suggestions, nothing works! Details of the issue:
  • 14-inch Macbook Pro M1 2021 (Macbook 18,3) on Sequoia 15.2 no longer recognizes external display (Brand: HGFRTEE) that worked just fine on Sonoma.
  • Using USB-C ports. Have tried all ports, none work with this monitor; all of them work with another monitor; the monitor works fine in all USB-C ports when using my other 14-inch Macbook Pro M1 2021 (Macbook 18,3) on Sequoia 15.2 (identical model and version).
  • For some reason, my Macbook recognizes the display instead as a sound output, named DPAudio.
  • The monitor doesn't say "No signal detected"; instead, it shows a black image, but the Macbook doesn't detect the display. Alt + Detect displays does nothing.

When are we getting a fix? This is just awful!!!

Just updated to Sequoia 15.3 (about 30 minutes ago) and the same problem, described above, just occurred again. Was writing an email and while I was typing, my computer went to sleep and i had to log back in to get back to work.

I don't know but that seems to be a really big bug to just let pass like that for all this time (I mean Sequoia 15.1 is out since October last year !

Same here. I waited 4 generations to make sure I get a product that has virtually no catastrophic problems like this. Seeing how this thread is flat out ignored, it is not too hard to determine Apple is more concerned with looks than usability. I took mine straight back to the store for a refund less than 24 hours after I bought it. Spent over a thousand dollars on it. Downloaded and installed irreversible system update and my left monitor stopped working.

Remember when the company was run by a visionary man who cared about user experience? Yeah... me too.

Thanks for the input, Luis, but your statement has a few glaring logical failures. "But, since it does not affect everyone and, in fact, it seems to affect only a minority of users..." While almost certainly true that not "everyone" is affected, to follow that with "in fact" is problematic, as you then identify that this problem affects "a minority of users;" but how do you know that to be true? Are you basing that on this discussion? If so, then wouldn't you need to know how representative this group is of the population of users to determine a "minority?" Since this is a self-selecting group you cannot infer anything about the representativeness of this sample compared to either the sampling frame or the population (quite the opposite; this group is likely very unrepresentative of the larger population). Further, you stated that "it seems futile to expect that a software update will fix it." Really? So you're assuming that a computer company does not fix bugs? What is that statement based on? My point here is that this thread is ongoing to try to figure out the issue and hopefully get Apple to fix it. Adding jump-to-conclusion offerings that breakdown into logical fallacies immediately is no help at all.

@AppleSince_85 - nice name! I too started using Apple in 1985, by the way.

I am not diminishing the trouble that this problem causes to all those affected.

Debating what is and is not representative is futile, so let's just agree to disagree on that - neither of us has data to formally claim, one way or the other, it is a matter of point of view, so I retract the "in fact" comment.

I hope that it gets resolved, and sooner rather than later.
