Thank you - disappointing

Apple made no attempt to hide the limitation. The Technical Specifications for that iMac were available on the main part of the Apple site as soon as they announced that model.

There are third-party workarounds you can get, using DisplayLink or similar technologies, that could let you use additional monitors with that Mac. These workarounds cannot add more first-class, hardware-supported video outputs to your Mac, and there may be compromises like

  • Lags
  • Unsuitability for tasks involving fast-changing content (video editing, gaming)
  • Inability to play DRM-infested video from commercial movie streaming services
  • The possibility that macOS updates might break your additional displays, and that you would then be reliant on a third-party vendor to update their drivers to fix things

Two vendors that sell DisplayLink-based dual-monitor adapters are Other World Computing and SonnetTech. You can also find DisplayLink-based adapters or hubs by Plugable and by others whose names escape me.

With any DIsplayLink-based workaround, you will probably wind up being directed to the Synaptics site for drivers and technical support FAQs. (Synaptics is the source of DisplayLink chip sets and the matching drivers.)
