iPhone 16 Pro (and other Pro) common battery drain issue
Intro
I’ve been using different Apple
products more than 10 years (iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, AirPods, Apple Watch’s).
Before creating this topic:
1) I dived deep into the issue, topics, threads and advices. I‘m well versed in the subject.
2) I’ve tried a lot different methods to solve it (not resolved);
3) I’m a common user (no streaming, gaming, video, photo editing, shooting etc).
Subject
iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18.1.1, 100% battery health.
Before it was iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 18.0.1, 87 battery health
Before it was iPhone 13 Pro, iOS 17, down to 85% battery health
Same issue on all of them
Issue
- battery drain (on all of my brand new 16P, before - old 14PM, 13P)
Symptoms
- average Screen On Time with the average usage on 16P, 13P 3-4 hours, on 14PM 4-5 hours
- when I use phone constantly (without turning screen off, and putting in the pocket) average Screen On Time increasing to couple of hours of each model.
- when I use phone periodically (call - out in the pocket, take - send message, put, again take), for example - during the commute to work etc., phone battery (all of them) drains quicker.
Taken measures
- Settings
- turning off Background app refresh - almost no impact on the battery;
- turning off Location services - almost no impact;
- turning off Always on Display - almost nothing. Except 16P - first couple of hours after turning AOD off - some battery improvement. Further - draining continue.
- turning off pro motion (limit to 60hz) - no visible impact.
- switching between 5G/4G cellular settings - no visual impact.
- another settings - no impact. Battery keeps draining
- deleting some my apps (common apps for average user) - nothing
- Resetting
- resetting phone and restoring from iCloud - no impact. Battery drains again
- resetting phone and setting up manually - from scratch (without restoring apps and settings from iCloud) - no impact - battery drains.
- iOS updating
- issue exists on different iOS versions (17/18) on different phones.
- Creating new iCloud
- creating brand new iCloud account and setting up manually all apps and phone’s settings (except photo - syncing from Google Photo, Notes, some Files, Reminders - sent from old iCloud through AirDroop) - no impact. Battery keeps draining.
- Changing physical SIM card
- in my case: SIM card was old (scratched and doesn’t support new 4G) - after changing to the new SIM card night battery drain issue (when phone is IDLE) was solved. But during the day battery drain continued to exist.
- Changing phones
- I’ve change iPhone 13P to 14PM, 14PM to 16P. Issue exists on all of them - battery keeps draining.
Additional clarifications
- after exploring tons of topics, reviews, threads and articles I’ve found that some other people (with different Pro/Max models throughout the world) have the same issue with battery drain, with same patterns.
- my wife’s regular iPhone 13 lives ok: 5-7 hrs SOT, 1-1,5 days till full charge.
- my old buddy iPhone XR doesn’t have such battery drain issue. I’ve been using it more than 2 years.
Conclusions (in my case):
- it’s note user case software issue - not settings, not apps, not wrong usage, not indexing, not syncing, not wrong iCloud;
- it’s not user case hardware issue - not wrong phone;
Its looks like Apple issue, some issue of the software communication with pro and pro max models of iPhone. Maybe pro motion. Some iPhone users claimed, that after switching from 16 / 15 pro models to the regular 16/15/14 or plus models - battery drain issue was minimised or even solved.
Im respect tech products (despite this is Apple / Android, Windows etc). I’m trying to apply the productive approach to all my devices: explore, learn, implement and use effectively.
But, 1,4k$ and long-standing issue. It’s not ok.
yes, and Apple /
iPhone is no longer the same as it used to be a long time ago.
at the age of consumerism Appel chased the market, tried to release new device every year. So, software doesn’t catching the hardware and we customers observe such issues.
For this reason Apple starting to look similar to competitors (Android) - they are too has some software issue. But, a the same time Apple competitors offering broad range of devices with broad range of prices and options.
if someone has own experience and solutions please share below.
P.s. It’s only my case. Maybe in another cases some measures might solve the battery drain issue.
