External cd player not connecting to my laptop Mac Book Air

I attempted to connect my external CD player to my laptop (Mac Book Air OS: Sonoma) When I plugged it into the laptop a message popped up asking me "Do you want to import the cd into music library. I clicked ok, immediately after an unknown error message (-54) popped up. How do I correct this?
