If the vendor shipped audiobooks on CDs formatted with the HFS ("no +") filesystem – either Mac-only CDs, or hybrid Mac/Windows CDs – that could also be an issue. Apple removed all support for HFS ("no +") in Catalina, which apparently has caused some issues for people trying to read old Mac and hybrid CDs on some Macs.

If what you have is a hybrid Mac/PC CD containing non-DRMed MP3s, you might be able to use a Windows PC to copy the MP3 files off the CD, and onto a USB flash drive, for transfer to a Mac.
