Iphone stolen whilst unlocked, now its offline, is it still unlocked?

Hi, my iphone got stolen out of my hand by a bike thief whilst it was unlocked. I chased them across the road a bit but they managed to get away.

About 5 minutes later I managed to lock the phone and now the 'erase data' says it is pending. I'm concerned that they still have my iPhone unlocked but somehow offline, should I be?

I've changed all my passwords and frozen cards etc, but I don't like the thought of them going through my private stuff. Should I be concerned they still have access or is it likely they'd have turned the phone off, hence its offline?

Thanks!

iPhone 13 mini, iOS 17

"Offline" will appear for one or more of the following reasons:

  • The battery has run down
  • The phone was powered off
  • The phone does not have an Internet connection where it is currently located
  • The thief placed the phone in a special type of small bag that will not allow the phone to either send or receive a signal. (This is very popular with iPhone thieves)

Unfortunately, there is not really anything that you can do about this except keep checking a few times each day to see if the status of the phone might have changed.

You noted that you locked the phone, so the only way that the thief could get into your phone would be to correctly guess your passcode in less than 10 tries before the phone won't even allow any more tries.

Do NOT remove the phone from the list of devices that are using your Apple ID as this would allow the thief to erase the phone and then try to set it up again as a new phone.

Then unfortunately, one or more of the conditions that I listed above is preventing you from connecting to the phone.

But the phone would still have locked automatically after a minute or two and required a passcode to access anything on the phone.

If the thief tried to turn off the passcode requirement while the phone was still unlocked, they would have been asked to confirm that action with your Apple ID, which they could not know.

So, your phone is still protected by the passcode. If the thief tried to guess your passcode, the phone would have gone into a security lock automatically after 10 incorrect tries. At that point, no more guesses would be allowed.
