I recently purchased a 24 inch iMac and I currently have a 13 inch Macbook Air that I purchased in 2020. I am trying to extend my iMac display to my Macbook and keeping the iMac as the primary display, but I am having issues. I've downloaded Duet Display but that doesn't seem to be working, either.

You can't use the 24-inch iMac as a monitor. It's far too new to use Target Display Mode – and the other Mac is also too recent to support using an old iMac as a Target Display.
It sounds like you were trying to use AirPlay to Mac. Both of your Macs are new enough that either of them could be an AirPlay Receiver for the other. AirPlay is not as good as a hardware-supported video connection, and I believe – although I could be wrong – that it offers a very limited choice of resolutions.

Did you try contacting Duet?
Yeah. Not having any luck. It also only shows the option to have my MacBook as the primary display.
Oh, just read that you said did I contact them. No, not yet. I’ll try that.
I guess I wasn’t patient enough. It’s now working and my MacBook shows up as an option to extend my display when I go to the display settings. It wasn’t working earlier. 😣
