Latest OS version for iMac Retina 5K 27-inch 2017

Hello All,

I can't seem to get beyond OS version "Ventura 13" for my Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017. The hardware is more than capable I think to handle later OS versions? I get the following error when trying to download the update from the App Store: "The requested version of macOS is not available. Please check if your Mac is compatible with this software."

3.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

Radeon Pro 570 4 GB

Any advice welcomed.

my "late 2015" iMac stopped upgrading beyond MacOS 11, then my apps (e.g. Adobe, TurboTax, Microsoft 365) started to complain about out of date OS and not being able to upgrade themselves either for security updates. TurboTax for example wouldn't install at all for 2024, and 2025 version won't work on MacOS 12 that is on my MacBook Air. You probably have more time but presumably you'll see the same issues and will need a plan to upgrade. I just got an M4 Mac Mini to replace the iMac and it's great so far.

it's a personal preference but I had a pair of Dell S2721QS 27" 4K monitors from covid days which plug in nicely to the Mac Mini (one on HDMI and one on USB-C via HDMI adapter) and they look great so I don't miss the iMac display at all and good to get caught back up on MacOS and apps. It feels more flexible setup to upgrade pieces as needed every few years rather than waiting until end-of-life. I don't have a camera and the sound is not as good as the iMac I think so those are things to consider but I am sure accessories to solve for those. And someone put the power button on the bottom, probably the same person who put the charging port underneath the mouse.

I think the Pro question you can check the guidance on the Apple buying page for Mac mini, it suggests Pro is for folks editing 8K video, compiling million lines of code etc and the memory comes as 24/48/64. I considered it, personally I had upgraded to 32GB in my 2015 iMac so I wanted to stick with that (see Activity Monitor for your memory usage when Mac is busiest), and Pro would have meant going up to 48GB for me, so the cost quickly goes up vs. regular M4. I have "Pro" iPhone and AirPods for their features but it seems M4 Pro is really about the CPU juice & memory you need and probably going to be overkill if happy on a 16GB 2017 iMac. I'm no expert and I've only had my M4 for a week after 8 years running an iMac into the ground - so just my 2 cents, but check the various buying guides on the Apple site.
