Looking for the above subject, I found that if I create a new image from a drive, I can password protect this image but not the original drive. In-the-other hand, if I want to password protect the drive itself, I absolutely have to erase it. Thank to confirm my understanding please.

You can encrypt an entire storage device, or can create an encrypted sparse bundle on an existing internal or external storage volume. FileVault can encrypt some volume formats without erasing.

For newer Macs, internal storage is usually already encrypted.
I’ll assume the footer here is correct and you have an Intel Mac here, and not a PPC Mac, nor an Apple silicon Mac.
