MacBook won’t start

From nowhere my MacBook Pro (2015) won’t start.

the screen shows a folder with a question mark.

I've tried command + R and the following happens:

Disk Utility

-Disk images: I can do First Aid on both Apple disk media Image and OS X Base system (this takes less than a sec and no issues).

Disk images seem to be greyed out on LHS and I can’t erase, restore or mount/unmount.

There is no other hard drive to choose on LHS.

ReInstall macOS (Sierra)

-When I click on message box “To download and restore macOS, your computer’s eligibility will be verified with Apple”, nothing happens or if I get to the next step to choose a hard drive (if I remember correctly) there is nothing to choose so can’t get to the next step from there.

I do not have an external hard drive with backup unfortunately (learning the hard way).

What is happening when you perform disk first aid? If that is not working, try and reset the NVRAM and the SMC.

If that is not working, this is most likely hardware failure I am afraid. What you can try is to connect an empty external harddrive, and see if you can install macOS on that. If you can install macOS on an external drive it is confirmed that it is internal disk issues that are causing your problems

How to reset NVRAM

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, R.
  3. Release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart. For example, you might hear a startup sound more than once, or see the Apple logo more than once.
  4. When your Mac finishes starting up, you might need to adjust any system settings that were reset.

For the SMC reset I will include a link, my post will get to long if I copy the instructions in here
