Big Problems after update to macOS Sequoia

First: I'm a German and my English is not as perfect as I want. So please be gracious with your answers.

I used to use macOS Mojave (10.15.6) until the last days of October. But I had big problems with the "old" Safari and newer websites. Sometimes they even didn't open. I also used QuickTime Pro for video editing.

But I had to chose, wether I'll be up-to-date in the web or not. So I decided to update my iMac to Sequoia (Yeah, I now think I was a fool, updating from Mojave directly to Sequoia).

But now I have big problems, starting from strange behavior of my iCloud Drive (only from my iMac, not from my MacBook Air!) and endig with beachballing in the apps Pages and Numbers (other Apple apps I didn't test) and LibreOffice (7.1.4.2).

Maybe there was great change in some organizational structures inside the OS or some apps, maybe some "orphans", which were not deleted or transferred. This are only guesses.

I can't provide screen shots, every time I tried, I get beachballing. So I will try it with words:

In the sidebar of a finder window I have a circular diagram right beside the iCloud Drive description. WhenI put the mouse-pointer over this circular diagram it turned into a "i" within a circle. After clicking in the info sign, I see two starting (and never ending) file-moving processes, one uploading and one downloading. Beneath the downloading bar is written: 0 KB from 1 Byte and beneath the other (uploading) proceeding bar is written: 0 KB from 418 KB.

Furthermore I have some strange symbols inside Downloads- and the Preview Folders inside the iCloud Drive: Cloud symbols with a call mark within the cloud.

I hope that someone of you can held me.

Regards

Andreas

Yes, I can actually read and write in German, but it is not my primary language.

Thanks for the images. Yes, this does appear to be a issue with your connection to the Internet.

  • The first symbol, with the text "iCoud synchronisiert nicht" (iCloud does not sync), indicates that there is a synchronization issue between your Mac and iCloud.
  • The second symbol, with the text: "Objekt wird geladen" (Object is loading), indicates the data transfers to/from iCloud is in-progress.

The issue now, is to try to locate where the bottleneck between your Mac and iCloud actually exists.

Let's start with does your Mac connect to your local network by Ethernet or by Wi-Fi? You responded to Barney-15E that your Mac is not connecting with a VPN, but is it still using some form of software firewall (other than Little Snitch)?

Regardless of how the Mac connects to the network, let's check which DNS servers it is using with the following command in the Terminal app: nslookup www.icloud.com

This will test the connection at the application layer and this is where client-server issues exist.

What you want to look for are the IP addresses listed after "Server" & "Address." These are either going to be local DNS servers on your home network, the ones assigned by your ISP, or commercial ones, like OpenDNS or Cloudflare. Regardless, they should be ones familiar to you. The result of this command should also provide you with the resolved DNS name of the iCloud server.

The other thing we want to check are all of the router hops between your Mac and iCloud to see if there are any excessive delays between them. We do this with the following command: traceroute www.icloud.com

Typically the first hop will be your local network router, the next will be your ISP's gateway. Each subsequent hop are routers between your ISP and iCloud. We are looking for either excessive times or complete failures.

Thank you, Tesserax, for your answer. To the second bullit: ("Objekt wird geladen") When I look to it two hours later, there will be no progress in the bar, still 1 KB from 1 Byte.

My Mac is connected by Wi-Fi, AirPort Extreme, which is connected by ethernet-cable to my router and uses the built-in firewall.

The answer to the "nslookup" Terminal command is:

iMac:~ andreasb**$ nslookup www.icloud.com

Server: 192.168.178.1

Address: 192.168.178.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:

www.icloud.com canonical name = www-cdn.icloud.com.akadns.net.

www-cdn.icloud.com.akadns.net canonical name = www.icloud.com-v1.edgekey.net.

www.icloud.com-v1.edgekey.net canonical name = e4478.dscb.akamaiedge.net.

Name: e4478.dscb.akamaiedge.net

Address: 23.67.164.4

****

Every hop, starting with number 5 lasts 15 to 20 seconds.

I hope you can decode the terminal responds. Thank you for your patient.

Hi Tesserax,

I today talk with my ISP and told about my problem. Unfortunately I had three (!) different people on the phone and everyone wanted to do something for me.

I don't no who made the right moves but now the traceroute command showed the following:

iMac:~ andreasbernau$ traceroute icloud.com

traceroute to icloud.com (17.253.144.10), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets

Hi, sorry for being late, yesterday evening I had other things to do. Yes you were right: My Mac is wireless connected to my AirPort Extreme (it's the tall one with latest software, version 7.9.1). This AirPort Extreme is connected to my FritzBox 7362 SL by cable. The FritzBox WLAN is not active (!).

About 2 week ago all went fine with these settings.

Shall I reset the FritzBox?

Thanks for providing the information. Ok, there is nothing wrong with your local wireless network or with your Mac connecting to it. That leaves us with the Mac itself.

At this point, I suggest that you contact Apple Support directly for further assistance with this matter. To do so, simply select the "Support" link on the lower left-hand side of this forum's web page. Good luck!
