I just bought lightning EarPods from Apple retailer, how do I make sure they are real. Once I connect them the typing on keyboard gets slightly laggy. But it has written on the wire of the EarPods “designed by Apple California”.

The only sure way to know you did not purchase fake Apple devices, is to buy them either directly from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller. You can check the reseller here: Find Locations - Apple
AFAIK, the Apple EarPods cannot not be checked via their serial number. Even if they could, a serial number can be faked.
