Unable to hide location services icon iPhone 16 Plus

When I put my phone on silent, the location services icon will briefly take the place of the silent icon when location services is connecting. In settings, the Status Bar Icon toggle switch should give me the option to not show the location services icon at all, but it does not. In fact, the toggle switch does not seem to do anything. (The toggle switch does work on my iPad as expected: showing the icon, or not as I choose. My iPad is running the same iOS 18.1.1) I have an iPhone 16, iOS 18.1.1 up to date. Looks like a bug to me.

After finding this video, it looks like the setting is behaving as designed. Perhaps Apple should re-word what the button says - "Show the icon in the status bar at all times," because when the toggled switch is off, it does what the description says, showing the icon only "when services request my location."

This allows for a more comprehensive overview of device status and ongoing activities. In contrast, iPhones, with their smaller screens, often require a dynamic approach to icon display. To accommodate various usage scenarios, iPhone status bar icons are dynamically swapped, prioritizing the most relevant information at any given moment.
