iPad Pro (M4) not seeing Apple Pencil Pro (iPad OS 18.1.1)

Posting in a separate thread in case Apple is monitoring issues

Bought a brand new iPad PRO (M4) today. Coming from a 5 year old iPad Pro running 17.6.1. Setup forced an update to 18.1.1. The brand new iPad Pro doesn't even see the pencil in Bluetooth devices to start the pairing process. It sees my AirPods with zero issues so it's not a Bluetooth thing.

I turned off the new iPad with the slider (no luck), then hard reset the new iPad (no luck), removed and unpaired the pencil from the old one to see if it was a pencil issue (it wasn't) the tip is on tight and it's charged to 100%. Certainly seems to be an software issue. I am all about forward progress but don't break what was working!

I am a graphic artist and this is a complete waste of $1,200. May need to return the new iPad at this point - it's 3 hours old. So frustrated. Any resolutions or ideas are appreciated.

Don’t use Bluetooth; place the pencil along the long side of the iPad Pro.

it never sees the pencil - never recognizes it's even there and it requires Bluetooth

If your Apple Pencil won't pair with your iPad

  1. Connect your Apple Pencil to your iPad:
    • With Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (2nd generation): Center your Apple Pencil on the magnetic connector.

  1. Keep the Pencil connected to your iPad, then restart your iPad and try to pair again
  2. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
  3. On the same screen, find your Apple Pencil under My Devices. If you find it, tap info. Then tap Forget this Device.
  4. Connect your Apple Pencil into your iPad and tap the Pair button when it appears after a few seconds.
  5. If the Pair button doesn't appear, wait for one minute while your Apple Pencil charges. Then try connecting your Apple Pencil again and wait until the Pair button appears.
  6. If your Apple Pencil Pro or Apple Pencil (2nd generation) still does not pair, remove any cases or covers from the iPad, then try to pair again.
  7. If the Pair button still doesn't appear, you might need service. Get service.
