Camera not working after ios 18.1.1 Update (iPhone 12 pro max)

An update on my side: 18.2 didn’t fix it so I went to an Apple store. They ran diagnostics and the conclusion was: something is not working right with the camera (sensor?), it may have worked ok before the first iOS update I did (18.1.1) but as part of the update process hardware gets checked, and because something did not respond ok with the camera iOS then disables it… So it could work as before but the OS doesn’t want to make it work… I’m not under warranty so I’ll trade it in for a refurbished phone, it’ll cost a bit more than the repair (£200!) but I’ll get a more recent model.

I took it in to an Apple store and they physically replaced the camera, which got it working again. Nobody there could explain how the software update permanently broke my hardware, but as I was in warranty the fix was free. Would have cost $169 otherwise. This took about 2 1/2 hours at the store.

When they hooked up to the phone and ran a camera diagnostic test, both cameras did activate and capture images, unlike the black/blank screens I was getting... But it also said that the image quality test failed.

iOS 18.2 has been released. There has been some speculation that it might be software related. Try the update and see if the issue II resolved.

Try a forced restart and if that doesn’t help please reset all settings. I’ve linked to Apple Support articles on performing each procedure.

iOS 18.2 was released almost 3 weeks ago. Please update to latest version.

FYI, just updated to 8.2 and now both, camera and ledlight are working again!!

More info: The camera app is unstable. If you deactive the flash and get the exposition time button (buttons dissappear radomly) then you can take the photo specially the selfie one.

So cameras are ok, it’s a software issue.

Apple know about it and telling people to go to a repair centre

the flash light doesn't work anymore either, not even occasionally. I tried all Apple recommended steps, including factory reset, called Apple support who advise a hardware repair... Still dubious that it's not a software issue, as the front camera does work in some instances.

Bad news, the error has just come back.

iOS 18.2.1 updated the day it was released. No problem till today.

Light not working, neither camera app.

Camera works via whatsapp or blackmagic cam but not from other apps as scanner pro.

FYI: Update to 8.3 didn’t fix the error.

And neither the update to 8.3.1.

So, there’s a bug, an archive(s) that get corrupted and Apple doesn’t know what’s happening.

8.2 with the update fixed it temporaly, but surely just because that archive was updated. But the bug it’s still there.

What app(s) are you using? Are you using the native Apple Camera app or third party apps?

Same here. iPhone 12 Pro 256 Mb. (new from august). Today I’ve seen the camera is just black. The normal camera and the selfie one. If you push to take photo or video it doesn’t work. On friday it was working. Native app or third party.

Similar problem here, consecutive to updating to latest iOS 18.1.1, iPhone 12 Pro. Native camera screen (to back of phone) is black. Instable behavior: when switching to selfie the selfie view sometimes switches on (but then I can't go back to the reverse view); if I go to time lapse, and set to 0.5 camera angle sometimes it will work, sometimes the camera just crashes. I had to use the camera within an app to scan a document and that worked. But another app uses the camera to scan a QR code for logging in, and that crashes systematically. So not only the camera doesn't work, but some apps I use on a day to day basis also don't work. Is there any way I can revert to an earlier iOS version??
