Best option to connect a macbook m3 pro to external display?

Hi, i am looking for advice from people using macbook pro with an external display about the connectivity.

So i am using it with a usb-c to usb-c cable which also charges my device. Since this keeps the battery to 100% does it affect the laptop in long run?

if yes, what is the better way to connect it and use it for the whole day? My usage is 6-7 hours daily. I’d be thankful to the pro’s for answer.

I am using a 4k benq screen(pd 2706u) at 60htz

I have seen people using hdmi to usb on their macbooks. Is that the last option?

thanks once again

that appears to be a 4K HDR display with Connectivity

HDMI (v2.0)

1

DisplayPort (v1.4)

1

USB C(PowerDelivery 90W, DisplayPort Alt Mode, Data)

1

MacBook Pro with M2 2023 or later can support any of those connections. with high enough spec cables that are appropriately SHORT.

Just as leroydouglas says, In general, you should ALWAYS connect a power source when it is possible to do so, and only run on batteries (which could be somewhat slower) when no power sources are at hand. Your Mac maintains it battery charge levels under program control, and will NEVER over-charge.

ref: Use an external display with your MacBook Pro

there is no harm in charging...

the rule of thumb has always been— if you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need the portability then run on the battery only—this is how you help optimize your battery charging and extend the working life of your battery by reducing the cycle count.

All M3 MacBook Pros have both USB-C (DisplayPort, Thunderbolt) ports and a HDMI port.

If this monitor has a HDMI input, and you want to connect it using HDMI, you could use a HDMI to HDMI cable, or a USB-C (DP) to HDMI adapter cable, or a USB-C or Thunderbolt dock that provides a HDMI port using the hardware video output from your Mac.

Be aware that if either HDMI port involved in the connection (Mac/adapter/dock, or monitor) is a HDMI 2.0 port, the bandwidth limitations of HDMI 2.0 may force you to choose between (60 Hz, 8-bit-per-channel color) and (30 Hz, 10-bit-per-channel color).

I don't believe that a USB-C to USB-C connection would force you to make that choice.

Thanks all, this was helpful! I'm transitioning from an iMac to a Macbook and am looking for docking station recommendations. My goal is to use my laptop with the lid closed to keep my desk clutter-free and minimize wear on the ports. Since service options in India are limited and resellers are often unhelpful, I'm looking for durable docking solutions.

I have curated few options:

Adding to this, can the PD100W port be used for USB-C to USB-C connection?

Thanks again!

Thanks Grant Bennet-Alder, this is helpful. Can you also share experience on the Docking stations or the hubs for the Mac. I am evolving from the iMac and am bothered about the wear and tear of the ports.

Shortlisted two of them them:

the basic need is simply a dock which can be used on the MacBook for everyday use and the Mac remains on the desk nice and clean.
