Macs can read NTFS-formatted drives – but cannot write to them without the aid of third-party drivers.
You might want to copy files from NTFS-formatted drives to Mac-formatted ones. There are two main Mac formats.
- APFS – a newer filesystem suited for SSDs
- HFS+ (Mac OS Extended) – this has more compatibility with old Macs, and may still be a better choice for mechanical hard disks (it tries harder to avoid creating fragmentation)
In either case, you would want format a drive as NON-case-sensitive – and for Mac OS Extended format, you would want to choose the Journaled option.
Another possibility is to install a third-party NTFS filesystem driver, such as Paragon NTFS .
