Magic Keyboard USB C does not control volume

There are several duplicate topics out there, all locked. My new Magic Keyboard USB C does not control volume with the volume keys. I think I tried everything:

  • Disconnect and reconnect
  • Forget device and re-pair
  • Go to function Function Keys settings and make sure "Use F1, F2, etc keys as standard function keys" is disabled (was already ok) => it seems this only works for the macbook keyboard, the magic keyboard ignores this setting and does it anyways. I can't select a keyboard for which to set the settings, which you would expect perhaps.
  • Reboot macbook + reconnect + re-pair etc.

Using a Macbook M3 Pro with Sonoma 14.5.

The keyboard is the USB C version without fingerprint, French layout.

I have seen the other duplicate topics. I have seen the help page how to use Function Keys (How to use the function keys on your Mac - Apple Support). No help there.

I am out of ideas. The Magic Keyboard uses the Function keys by default and I can't disable that. The macbook keyboard does it right.

So here's an update with the fix: Updating so Sequoia (from Sonoma) fixed the ordeal. I also noticed that the "connected" keyboard icon appearing on screen is now the design of the new magic keyboard, instead of the one with the AA batteries.

Conclusion for anyone encountering this: always update to the latest OS version to see if it fixes the problem. No matter what keyboard, no matter what version you're on.
