New Magic Keyboard F-keys not controlling volume on iMac

I just bought a new Magic Keyboard for my iMac because the old one quit. I can't get the f keys to control the volume. I have followed the steps but nothing changes. f10 and f 12 do nothing while f11 brings me back to the desktop. HELP!!! When I go to System Preferences-Keyboard-Shortcuts, it only gives me very limited options to access 7 fn's.

Just to confirm:

  • Is this new Magic Keyboard any of these model: A3118, A3119, or A3203? These were all introduced by Apple in 2024.
  • Is your Mac still running macOS 12.7 (Monterey)?

If both are true, full keyboard features will only be available on Silicon Macs running macOS 15.1 (Sequoia) or later.

  • A3118 = Magic Keyboard with Touch ID for Mac models with Apple silicon (USB-C)
  • A3119 = Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad for Mac models with Apple silicon (USB-C)
  • A3203 = Magic Keyboard (USB-C). Apple indicates that it is compatible with the 27" Intel-based iMacs released in 2019 and 2020, and the iMac Pro (2017) – the only three Intel-based Macs that can run macOS 15.1.

Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad for Mac models - Apple appears to be model A1843, a keyboard released in June 2017. It has a Lightning connector for recharging and initial pairing (but can be connected to a Mac's USB-C port using an appropriate adapter), and requires macOS 10.12.4 (Sierra) or later. I do not believe the Compatibility list for this one is complete, as it omits a lot of iMacs that can run Sierra or later.
