Siri couldn't provide the Thanksgiving destination of a restaurant so I opened Google Maps to find it. Since 11/28/24 I can't change the side panel or default map back to Apple Maps. Does anyone have any suggestions?

When I first got the Mazda, I used both Google & Apple Maps in CarPlay in an earlier version of IOS. I was able to switch back and forth and Apple Maps came on each time I connected to my vehicle. Today 'm using IOS 18.1.1. The work around: CarPlay, Mazda under My Car, Customize and remove Google Maps. Apple Maps now appears in the side panel and is the maps app. If I try to add back Google Maps from the More Apps list, Google Maps hijacks CarPlay and if you want Apple Maps you have to go to settings each time and choose it. It's a mystery why it allows an app to overwrite the default. Thank you for helping me remember it use to work differently.

OK. So factory unit. My brother is a Mazda fan and had a similar issue. He asked me and as I recall he had to go into his iPhone and in Settings app choose Car Play and forget the car. He then paired them again. Sort of the brute force way of doing it and he said it worked.
Is that a factory unit or aftermarket?
iPhone 12 Max Pro connected to my Mazda CX5. Worked flawlessly until I used Google Maps once.
