Iphone 4 music skipping/pausing?

Hi Guys,

Ive had my iphone 4 for aroudn a month now, and when listening to music the audio sometimes skips as if it were a heavily scratched cd. they also sometimes stop playing as if theyve been paused but they are still playing (little play logo in top corner present) I know the music files are fine as i used them on my 3GS for the duration of my time using the phone. Anyone else having these problems? or is there a way i can get these to stop happening without having to visit the genius bar?

Cheers!

I'm having the same problem...started on my iPhone 4 with the random mix refusing to play some songs.

With my iPhone 4S...the audio does the skipping like a scratched CD when resuming play with my headphones (Stock Apple)...but always clears up after a few seconds.

It's rather annoying that we've heard about battery issues and Siri...but nothing about this, it's kind of a big deal.

Hi Guys

I'm also experiencing the same issue, but mine started after i upgraded to IOS5. My Iphone 4 basically refuses to play certain tracks or pauses after playing one track. The shuffle option does not work at all. This is really irritating and I'd appreciate any help in this regard. By the way, I also do not have zonealarm installed, so the problem has to come from somewhere else. Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having this issue as well and it only started after the OS5 upgrade. I would think that if your unit is working fine for months prior to the OS5 release, then it starts this "skipping" issue after the upgrade, then it would be obvious that the issue was with the OS5 update. However, Apple had me do several different restores, made me change the usb cord, made me change the jack the usb cable was connected to, made me turn off my Norton Security, had me remove then re-add the songs several times, they reinstalled the drivers at the store, they wiped the phone clean and sent me home, they even told me that my computer was too slow, etc. When the problem still occured, they exchanged the unit and I went from having an iPhone that did the skipping maybe once a day, to now having one that skips sporatically throughout every 6 or 7 songs. It's embarassing because if I let someone else listen to a song or play the song without the headphones, I never know what's going to happen in terms of playback. The shake to shuffle has always been off. I don't have ZoneAlarm. I'm not sure what to do at this point because the music portion is my most used part of my iPhone and it's also the most troubling. It ***** that the phone worked completely fine prior to the update, but now the Apple folks want to blame everything but the update itself and despite the fact that there are so many posts about this problem after each upgrade, everytime you talk to an Apple representative, they act like they've never heard of the issue and you're speaking a foreign language. With my $300 payment and the two year contract I'm locked into, I need some answers. That doesn't include the money I've paid for my iPod classic, and my iPod touch that I've purchased over the years.

Hi, I was having the same problem & after some time researching it online i found out that u can convert each song, to an ACC version. right click on the song & choose create ACC version, once i did that i erased the other file( that was skipping on my phone) u erase the file that DOESNT say encoded by itunes it will say encoded by someone else. once i did that my music on my phone works perfect again 🙂

Hey lilmamaof2. Thanks for the response. Am I correct in understanding that your issue was with a specific song or songs skipping? I've seen that suggestion a few times and opted not to take it because the problem isn't specific to certain songs or files, meaning I can play one song 5 times perfectly and on the 6th time it may start skipping, then the next song starts skipping until the iPhone works it way through the kinks and starts playing normally again, It does the same thing with Podcasts. If it was only certain songs that I was having trouble with, I would go ahead and create the ACC version, but with 3,000+ songs, I'd rather just deal with the intermittent skipping than manually change each file and delete the old one. That would be very time consuming and I'd go nuts by the 40th song. 😁

This issue has plagued me as well. My solution was to close all of my open apps and restart the music player. The disfunction is the result of one of your apps that is running. I dont know how to isolate which one is causing my issues, but I know for a fact that it is an app other than music. I did not downgrade iTunes or rebuild my playlist. I just closed out my apps and it started working properly.

Ok. The fact is that my issue was causes by a software and not a hardware issue

My problem started a week ago. I didn't have zone alarm and my solution I thought was to upgrade to iOS 5

But many people said their problem started after the upgrade. :( my solution was to re-enable my hands free control (a jb app that brings up voice control when you say a word like "siri") I had turned it off cause it brought my voice control up alot from background noise etc.. I could have tried to delete it but I didn't I just turned

The sensitivity down real low. I think uninstalling it would have worked to. Thanks that's my two cents I really hope this helps some1 cause I'm tired of people talking aboutapple has expensive/cheap faulty products......

Hi all.

Possible fix:

Had this annoying issue, or similar. Songs on my iphone 4 would skip until it found a song it could play, but often left up on the screen a different song to the one playing. It appeared songs hadnt been transferred or were missing causingthe phone to skip the songs.

I heard that if you get a 'weird' beep noise this is the 'shake to shuffle' feature which can be turned off via Settings>Music.

If you have a similar issue to mine, I read converting to AAC (right click song in Itunes and choose 'convert to AAC) could work, and did for me, but is time consuming and duplicates the song.

What worked for me? Turning off 'convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC' on the Devices>Your Iphone main menu (device summary page). This reloads all songs to the iphone and appears to fix the issue. I have checked a few songs I knew had issues and they now work, and I can get through 10+ shuffle songs (thats as many as I checked) without a skip.

Good luck. Let me know if it works.

Exact same problem here - skipping songs randomly, displaying different song than what it's playing, etc. "Shake to Shuffle" was OFF, and I am a long time Mac user with no zonealarm software to worry about. And all of these songs had worked prior to the ios5 update. And yes, I had "Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbs" checked to save space.

Bottom line: same fix worked for me. But I also had the annoying problem of too much "Other" space taken up on my iPhone, so when I unchecked the 128kbs option, I did not have enough space to copy everything over at that point. So I did the standard "Restore" option, wiping the phone and taking a couple of hours to restore from backup and then copy all of my apps and music over again (at their original bit rate.) Completely worth it, as the problem is now entirely gone.

Thanks tons, Jason and and everybody who posted on this issue.
