Paid extra for promotional gift card offer on Black Friday offer 2024!

I was charged $175 extra for the promotion gift card! There is something wrong (glitch) between the invoice and payment process! Anybody faced the same issue!

Explanation:

I purchased MacBook Air M3 for $1393.14 with taxes.

I used gift cards worth of $786.

Then the remaining was charged $607.14 + $175 on my credit card. That’s totally $1568.14. $175 was over authorized rather than providing it as promotional offer.

Edited after chatting with apple specialist….

they agreed that there was glitch between the invoice and payment process, which led to over authorization of $175. Then they reversed the payment of $175 to my credit card. Also I received the $175 gift card once the MacBook Air was shipped as advertised on the website.

It took totally 2 hours of phone chatting to explain to a series of specialists and finally an apple world wide engineer solved my concern! Hufff!

Hey guys… Don’t give up! I fought and won the (scam) glitch.

As Nick said, Apple's normal procedure is to charge for the gift card and then deduct the cost from the price of the other item(s) you bought. In addition to other reasons, this is to prevent someone from returning the Apple product for a full-price refund and just keeping the gift card.

If you don't see the amount of the gift card deducted from what else you purchased, contact the Apple Store for assistance.

When Apple offers a "free gift card" with the purchase of a computer, they often arrange the invoices this way:

  • They charge you full price for the gift card.
  • They charge you (full price minus the value of the gift card) for the computer.

The bottom line is that if you keep both, you basically got the gift card for free. However, this makes it a bit harder for someone to try to scam Apple by returning the Mac (for a full refund) while keeping the gift card. The gift card isn't a "no-strings-attached" present that you get for free even if you change your mind about buying the Mac.

It does make for very strange-looking invoices until you figure out what is going on.
