why did apple remove the ability to control airpods with apple watch?

In the latest update for Apple Watch, iOS 11, Apple removed the convenient ability to switch between pass through and anc on the AirPod pro using an Apple Watch. For those of us that are active and leave the bulky phone at home, this is very frustrating. We used to be able to access this service to g easily, now it takes several steps to get to the anc setting and we cannot get to pass through. Any solutions to this issue would be appreciated. But please do not suggest I carry my phone on a half marathon.

It's still there on my watch. Bring up the Control Center by tapping the side button (the flat oval button next to the digital crown). Tap the AirPod control button. Make your selection.

You can also switch between them on the AirPods themselves.
