what apple watch to use with iphone

I have just purchased an Apple Watch 8 thinking my iPhone 8 would pair. It’s saying I need an XS or later. Now stuck between swapping my phone or getting an earlier model Apple Watch. I would just like to check which Apple Watches would be ok to use with an iPhone 8
