A couple of weeks ago the MHRA (the governing body in the UK) hadn’t even received a request for approval but things are definitely starting to happen. When IOS 18.2 drops the Apple Hearing Aid Test will be working for people in the UK. How much longer the hearing aid feature takes is anybody's guess things are obviously moving on.

If you have an Apple iPad or old iPhone running and IOS older than 18.1 you can set them up to use as hearing aids using the Transparency Mode in Settings/AccessibilityAudio and Visual/Headphone Accommodations. I've been using them since September and they work really well.

If you have an Apple iPad or an older iPhone running and IOS older than 18.1 you can set them up without restrictions. You will need to download the Mimi app to test your hearing and create an audiogram and set them up in:

Settings/Accessibility/Audio Visual/Headphone Accommodations

You will need the AirPods connected via bluetooth to set them up.

The feature has been available since September 2022 when the AirPod Pro 2s were launched.

Please note that, while earlier versions of iOS supported features that were useful for people with hearing loss, they did NOT support the true Hearing Aid feature. Whether or not you have access to the older version and whether or not those features would be useful to you is something only you can answer.

Hi Idris. We've had this same discussion before. A question for you. Do you actually have hearing loss of any type? I doubt that you do. From what I have read from people who used the Transparency Mode pre IOS 18.1 and are now using the latest Hearing Aid with 18.1 there is very little difference, if any at all. Some say there is less volume available with the new version and some say there is more and until you have actually tried it yourself how can you have an opinion on it?

As far as I can see there is a simplified set of menus and the addition of the Apple Hearing Test that some have struggled with and quite a few useful sliders have disappeared in 18.1.

I will stick with 17.7.1 until approval has been granted in the UK and may leave it until 18.5 or 18.6 or even longer until the kinks have been ironed out.

For the benefit of everybody in this community, please can you explain how the " true Hearing Aid feature" differs from the Pre 18.1 hearing aid feature?

Thank you.
