Calculator app issues in iOS18

The new calculator app appears to be a big step backwards with respect to the previous one. There are some really nice capabilities that have been lost:

  • Lost the ability to apply repeatedly the same operation. With the previous app, you could press an operator twice and then just press "=" and see the same operation repeated as many times, as you pressed "=". For instance, if you wanted to see how your investments grow over several years at a constant rate of growth of, let's say 10% per year, you would press 1.1, then "*" twice and then press = to see the growth after 2 years, press = again for 3 years, etc. Now, I have to use logs and do a different computation for each year. Crazy!! The features was also useful to teach multiplication: before, you could just press "+" twice and then you can show a child how 5 x 3 = 15 is just adding 5, 3 times.
  • Lost the ability to see intermediate results (e.g. 1+3 you will see 4 without the need to press "="). Now, you need to press "=" before you see anything.
  • Lost the ability to switch from the simple calculator to the scientific one just by turning the phone sideways. That was so intuitive, simple and powerful. Now it's hidden in a menu that you have to access everytime you need to switch.
  • The AC button (all clear?) disappears sometimes in scientific mode. If you have a 6 digit number on the screen you have to press backspace 6 times to clear it up, instead of one press on AC.

It is really shameful that we have this $1,000+ device that can do so much in principle, but we have to buy a separate calculator, or download yet another ad-full third party application to do very simple things.

Apple doesn't read here in this user-to-user forum for feedback or suggestions. You can, however, let them know your thoughts here:

Meanwhile, you may want to consider one of the many third-party calculator apps in the App Store. One of them may better suit your needs. PCalc gets lots of recommendations.
