I turned off all notifications and it's still happening. I can't really describe it. It's like a drop of water from a faucet - that's the nearest I can describe it. It's annoying. It happens whether I'm on the Mac or not, screen awake or sleep. Please help!

Thank you, den.thed. I found the issue - it was Skype notifications, even though I had turned its notifications off. I finally had to quit the application. I'll keep your suggestion in mind for the future!

Go to Apple > System Settings > Sound and test with "Play user interface sound effects" switch turned Off.
