I think my iPhone was hacked

I got an email from my iCloud account saying g my phone was had malware installed and monitoring what and where I go online. Asking for payment or will release personal and compromising info. How do determine if it is real or just a scam?

in the meantime I changed my Apple account password

It’s a scam email. Do not interact with it in any way. Delete the email. Apple will never send an email like that. Lastly, please review the information in the Apple Support article linked below. It will help you from falling victim to scam communications in the future.
