Unable to share Apple Notes with someone who doesn’t have an Apple ID

Device: iPhone 14 Pro Max

iOS Version: 18.1.1

Issue: Unable to share an Apple Notes folder with someone who doesn’t have an Apple ID.

Steps Taken:

1. Long-press the folder in Apple Notes.

2. Select Share.

3. Choose Anyone With the Link.

4. Set permissions to View Only.

5. Copy the link.

Tested:

• Pasted the link into Brave Browser and Safari.

• Both return an Apple webpage asking the user to sign in or create an Apple account.

The intention is to share the folder with non-Apple users, but the link prompts for an Apple ID.

Question:

Why is this not working as expected? Is sharing with non-Apple users supported in this way?

(Cheeky comment: Please don’t tell me to restart my phone. It’s 2024!)

Sorry, an iCloud account is required for the person receiving the folder sharing invitation. Without an Apple Account, you can only send a copy of a specific note. You cannot send a copy of a note folder, though.

Web-only access to iCloud - Apple Support

"What is web-only access to iCloud?

Web-only access to iCloud lets you share and collaborate with others in real time on documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, even if they don't have access to an Apple device. That means you can invite anyone to share a file. Then they can use their web-only account to access the file and make edits, without leaving iCloud. It includes access to iCloud Drive, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and Notes for iCloud, and 1GB of free storage for any notes and documents you create."
