AirTag location: No Location Found

Paired the air tag with my phone. Put a new battery in and heard the chirp sound. In Find it says no location found as it sits next to my phone. Replaced the new battery with yet another new battery and the same thing happened.

Did I simply get a faulty air tag, or is there a way to force the tag to show its location?

It's important to understand that an Apple AirTag does NOT know its location. It has no way to do so.

When it is within Bluetooth range (~30-40'), your iPhone will pick up its Bluetooth signal that contains the tag's ID. When outside of that range, the tag relies on other iPhones to relay their GPS location to the Apple servers over the Internet.

Regardless, is this a brand new AirTag? If it is, there shouldn't be any need to replace its battery; only to remove the small tag so that it gets power from the included battery.

It would help if you can shed some light on how you got this tag so that we can better answer your questions.

Bought the tag 2 years ago. Never really worked. Once in a blue moon it would show a location, but mostly it didn’t. Threw it in a drawer until today - figure I’d give it another try.

It shows up on my phone as trying to connect, but doesn’t show a location.

The tag is on my wife’s account and shared with me. She is out of town. Location doesn’t show up for her either. .
