I don't have an iPhone 1 in front of me. So, what happens when you enable Auto-Correction or disable Auto-Correction? Go here: How to Use Auto-Correction and Predictive Text on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
Avoid Auto-Correction:
As the above line reads: "To manage your text replacements, tap Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement."
