Mac Studio (2022, M1 Ultra) Experiencing Kernel Panics

Hi everyone,

My Mac Studio regularly throws kernel panics that may be hardware related. Everything is fully up to date and I don't believe I have any blatant configuration errors but could someone review my Etrecheck report and shed some light on this please? I have a suspicion it could either be my OWC Thunderbay RAID or any one of my 3 different displays (2 connected via USB, 1 connected by HDMI).

I really don't have an option to go without the RAID because most of what I do is audio/video production and I need the storage.

Thanks folks!

I would recommend that you update SoftRaid and other third party apps. The EtreCheck reports indicates it may be a sign of failing hardware which would include external peripherals such as the HD's attached to the computer. I have several recommendations.

  1. Restart the computer, your report indicates it has been 10 days.
  2. Download and run DriveDX and have it run reports on your drives. Examine the report closely, if any errors appear on any of the peripheral EHDs (and if you have SSDs attached) that indicates that drive is failing and should be replaced.
  3. Update all of your software including Mac OS, SoftRAID and all other third party apps.

KPs can be caused by hardware and software so they can be tricky to troubleshoot and it really comes down to eliminating candidates. The reason to update your software is out of date or faulty third party apps can cause KPs. I was having a similar KP issue with SoftRaid a few months ago and tried updates but that did not solve the problem so I simply shutdown the affected drive (thinking I had a faulty HD). After several months, I tried again by turning on the affected RAID drive and updated SoftRaid and Mac OS and the KP's have disappeared so I suspect mine was related to a software issue somewhere and the updates solved the problem.

<< panic(cpu 4 [...] Kernel data abort... >>

kernel data abort happens when an instruction or operand or data cannot be accessed for some reason. Since it occurs in the kernel, and not in user space, it panics the entire kernel.

That is fairly likely to be a hardware issue. but unless you can fail the diagnostic or re-create it on demand the Genius Bar can not help you.

I second the steps rkaufman87 has already suggested, and when you have no more things to bring up to date, and the problem is still recurring, contact support and ask for a specialist to read your panic reports.

Do not erase your Mac without posting or saving a complete panic report.

Kernel Panic Reports are stored in the Folder at:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

If you copy and paste that string into:

Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder

it will take you to the Folder where those reports are stored.

Kernel panic reports are named with Date&Time and start or end in ‘panic’

If you find one, please post as much as you can here, by using the “additional text” Icon in the reply footer (looks like a paper with writing). (Once the report devolves into incessant software-names or incessant Base-64 dumps with lots of AAAAAA lines, you are done.)

Please don’t post more about 20 lines of any other types of reports — they are interminable, and any information useful for this purpose is on the first screenful.
