Trading in a carrier-locked iPhone for a new phone

I bought an iPhone off of facebook marketplace that is in near mint condition. I have been using it as a secondary phone without service, but I am looking to trade it in for a new phone. If the phone is carrier locked from the previous owner, can I still trade it in as credit for a new phone?
