Defective iPhone case, bad customer service

I bought a silicone iPhone case at the Apple store thinking this thing will last me forever. Purchased it in March 2024 and as of November 2024 this thing is cracked and chipped.

I finally had to throw it out and purchase a non-Apple case. For $49 + tax, I could've bought a better quality durable case on Amazon.

I went to the "genius" bar and they basically told me too bad. There will be no replacement, refund or discount. And I should just purchase another one.

I called support and they said because I purchased in store I had to take it up with the store.

This is the worst customer service. I want to to know if anyone else has had their Apple approved "quality" case break and if they were able to get any type of replacement or discount.

If it were me, I'd go back and ask to speak to the manager. Calmly ask why they won't replace it under warranty. It's hard to say from the information provided if they gave you such an explanation or what it was. If they believe that the damage was caused by abuse (e.g., your dog chewed it) that wouldn't be covered by warranty. But that's the only reason I can think of that it wouldn't be.

Apple's one-year limited warranty generally applies to defects in materials or workmanship for Apple-branded accessories, including their silicone iPhone cases. However, as you have been informed, this warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, accidental damage, or issues caused by misuse.

Since you have already taken this case to your local Apple store, and they determined that it was not a manufacturing defect, is why they are not providing you any form of reimbursement. However, it is interesting to note that we get numerous posts here about folks with similar issues with these particular silicon cases. Whether or not, Apple will do anything about it, no one here would know. FWIW, from my experience, silicon does not make for a very protective material against wear & tear ... at best, only providing a limited amount of protection against drops.

It's also important to note that this support community is primarily focused on Apple users helping others with technical issues with their Apple products. There is very little we can offer when the issue is non-technical. Therefore, how you want to proceed with your claim with Apple is totally up to you. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply.

Is there a warranty? Because I tried to look on the website for the warranty and could not find it.

The employees did not mention a warranty and insisted that because of the nature of the silicone that Apple uses it will chip and crack. They said that is how the material is.

If the damage was my fault, I definitely would take responsibility and not bother going to the store. I do not have any pets and the damage is literally just from the phone being dropped. I was calm when I spoke to them. They just kept repeating that's just how silicone cases are.
