Siri Recording Private Phone Conversations Without Permission?

This just happened a moment ago. I was on my iPhone 14 Pro talking with a friend and during our conversation a voice that sounded like Siri came on the line and stated “This call is being recorded”. We both asked and my friend confirmed that he heard the announcement as well. A few moments later the Siri voice came back on the line and stated “This call is no longer being recorded”

What’s going on here? Does Siri have the capability to record phone conversations without either parties permission or input? This is a very concerning privacy issue and I’m hoping for a believable explanation right away.

>>In some countries and regions, you can record a phone call when you’re talking to one other person. In select regions and languages, you can view the transcript of the call in the Notes app. See the iOS and iPadOS Feature Availability website.

Note: Call recording is not currently available in the European Union, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.<<

Record and transcribe a call on iPhone – Apple Support

Many US states require one or both parties to be aware that a recording is being made. This was the voice you heard at beginning and end of recorded call.

I suspect Siri was activated by accident.

Starting with iOS 18.1, users can record phone calls on iPhones using Siri,

  1. While on a call, tap the call recording button in the top left corner of the screen.
  2. Siri will notify everyone on the call that the call is being recorded.
  3. A note notification will appear to indicate that a new note has been created for the transcript.
  4. To stop recording before ending the call, tap the stop button.
  5. The recording and call will end when the call ends.
  6. A notification will appear to indicate that the call recording has been created in Notes.
  7. Tap the notification to open the recording or review the transcript.
