Dead pixel on a brand new MacBook Pro: Amazon return or Apple repair?

Sadly, Amazon has a deceptive “Apple Store” - literally calls it that!, which is NOT the same as buying from Apple!!! Well, now I know. Sadly, my brand new MacBook Pro right out of the box, has a dead pixel in the middle of the screen. I am a photographer so yes, it matters a lot. Now, neither Amazon nor Apple would exchange it for a non defective unit. Amazon has some crazy policy where you can only return it (within 2 weeks), they will NOT exchange, and when you return it they’ll hold your money hostage for up to a month, before they finally issue a refund. Apple on the other hand, takes zero responsibility for the condition of a brand new product, they will only repair, they won’t exchange it either because it wasn’t bought directly from them. So now I’m being screwed either way, as my only two options are: go through a long **** of a return process with Amazon so I could then re-purchase it from Apple, which will cost me more $$ and take a long time, and won’t have it by Xmas (it’s in part a Xmas present). Or, have this brand new 2k laptop repaired under the Apple warranty, where they’ll replace the entire screen (!), ultimately rendering it refurbished. So much for buying new! 😟 I can then hope for the best, but, what if that dead pixel is just the first of more to come issues with a defective unit? Or what if replacing the screen causes more issues? 😩

Wise people of the internet, what would you do in my place? Anyone with a similar experience?

I only have few more days left to decide if I’m going to return it or have it repaired. 😨

Given the circumstances, that's what I would do also.

You may be able to purchase from Apple without having to pay anything for a month or so if you use their credit card: Apple Card - Monthly Installments - Apple. By that time you should have your refund, and the first payment will be a fraction of it anyway. Just read the fine print because it's been a while since I did that.

Shipping is free and you'll probably have that new Mac in a couple of days.

Yeap, I certainly know that now. My post was more about wondering what others would do in my situation, or if anyone has a similar experience. But if nothing else, it at least hopefully can help others not to get into the same predicament.

I have decided to go through with the painful return process, and re-purchase from Apple directly once I have the money back.

Amazon or whomever you buy from makes money from your sale. if you are not getting a satisfactory purchase and initial support for a Dead-on-Arrival item, DO NOT reward Bad Behavior.

it would be nice to have it available according to your original plan, but if the device is defective, that can't happen. Oh well. Wrap an I.O.U. and tell the recipient it's been delayed.

Correct, it's not, but there is little if any difference between the two any more. Amazon is an authorized Apple retailer. They are not being deceptive. You do however need to be sure you are buying from Amazon's official Apple Store and not a third party, which isn't always obvious on Amazon. People tend to look at prices first, and jump at the lowest one.

The following link (which may change at any time) will take you directly to the Amazon Apple Store:

This crazy policy as you call it is literally identical to Apple's.

At one time Amazon's return policy was more generous than Apple's, and was one justification for choosing Amazon over Apple. This is no longer the case. If you have trouble with an Apple product, Amazon will expect you to contact Apple first, and only after reviewing all their relevant Support documents — which generally conclude with "contact Apple" anyway.

I have always recommended buying directly from Apple whenever possible — and I do understand there are places on Earth where that is not an option — but if you can buy directly from Apple, do it. There is no reason to purchase a Mac from anyone else... unless of course you have some special cash back, rewards, gift card or similar discount offer specific to that retailer.

That's not even remotely true. That statement discredits yourself and detracts from whatever you may have written after it, so that's where I stopped reading.

What I meant by that is Apple will only offer a repair, which renders a brand new product refurbished. That is a huge difference, especially when paying a lot of $$ for new. They do not offer exchange of a brand new defective product for a non-defective one, even though it is a manufacturer defect, because it went through Amazon.

And yes, I did purchase from the Amazon’s official Apple Store. This is where the return/replacement policy differs between Apple and Amazon. If you purchase directly from Apple they will exchange it in a case like this. But they won’t do it when purchased through Amazon or any other authorized retailer. Of course that’s something I wasn’t aware of prior to my purchase. And yes, there was bf discount and an Amazon gift card, two reasons why the purchase went through the Amazon’s Apple Store.
