Importing photos from iphone to mac

I am trying to import around 1500 photos (10.92GB) and videos from my iPhone Xs 17.7.2 to my iMac Sequoia 15.1.1, which has 346 GB available space. It clears the 'preparing to import from iPhone' step, and all photos appear in the Photos app on my iMac. When I select 'import all new items' however, it barely reaches a tiny fraction of the import progress bar. I have left it for a couple of hours on a few occasions but no further progress is reached, and only a handful of the photos have been imported.

Has anyone experienced this before?

It sounds like there might be a corrupt file that's hanging it up. The first thing that I'd try is using the app Image Capture that's in your Applications folder. I'd try transferring pictures to folders on the Mac rather than into Photos. That way, you could better monitor what's working and what's not.

I'd also try importing smaller groups of pictures at a time, so a glitch won't force you to start completely over again. You may be able to identify the bad file and avoid it. Once you get pictures into folders, you can import those to Photos and it should go smoothly.
