Why is my MacBook Pro not charging with a cable?

OS 13.6.7. Is there ever a reason why, even with power cable connected, a Macbook Pro would not be charging or connected to power? Trying to troubleshoot. Newer charging cable. It seems to connect power randomly lately, not sure why.

If the power cable is plugged in and not charging then go into Settings/Battery. If it says something like 'Charging on Hold. Optimizing Battery Charging. Scheduled to finish charging by 1600' it means it's working as normal. If you go into the control centre (from the menu bar) and click on the battery it should give you the option to charge to full now - useful if you're heading out and need it charged. All this is normal and part of the battery management.

If none of the above applies in your case then you've got a problem. Try a different PSU and cable if you can. If you can charge from USB try that. If none of those work then a it's probably a trip to the nearest Apple shop.
