The wireless keyboard or tracker lock up frequently, and they do not hold a charge for more than a few days at a time. They work fine with a cord attached. My daughter believes it may be time for an upgrade, or new desktop, as she believes these computers age out in a relatively short time.

Upgrading MacOS will not do anything to fix a dying keyboard. Just get a new keyboard if your current machine meets your needs.

In any case, a 21.5 inch iMac from 2017 can't be upgraded beyond Ventura, which is now 2 years behind. So there is a good case for getting a new machine to benefit from the newest MacOS features, and to avoid not being able to download apps because they require later os versions.

FYI, I believe the OP may have an iMac Pro which is unique & can be upgraded to Sequoia.

Right, then that would be 27 inch instead of 21.5

I missed that. The OP made a mistake on the model in some fashion, but at least all the bases are covered in this thread. I'm leaning in the direction your assumption of a regular iMac is correct.

FYI, never upgrade the OS to a new major version if you are having issues with the current version of the OS. A major OS upgrade won't fix the problem and will most likely make things worse....there are only a very few exceptions.

It is Ok to install the minor OS patches to attempt to fix a problem, since that is part of what those minor point release update patches do.
