Permanently disable adaptive transparency mode on AirPods Pro 2

Playing a multiplayer game on my iPad and using my AirPods Pro 2 but when I speak to my teammates my Air Pods switch to adaptive mode and the game sound effects lose volume. Long-pressing the stem will switch it back to noise-canceling mode, but then it switches back to adaptive when I speak.

I found this article and it seemed helpful: Permanently disable adaptive transparency… - Apple Community

I attemped to perform the procedure from my Mac's System Settings... There is a "Press and Hold to Cycle Between" section in the Air Pods pane but even if I enable Transparency, I cannot uncheck Adaptive. I noticed a "Conversation Awareness" toggle that stood out, so I disabled that and was then able to uncheck Adaptive if Transparency is also enabled!

I was unable to reply to the above article with my alternate solution so Discussions prompted me to ask a new question instead.
