Macbook Air - Cantina last Update

I have an older MacBook Air purchased in 2013. It no longer will update the software to run newer programs. Is there anyway to resolve this? Buying a new computer is a huge purchase and i need the computer for returning to school. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

It won't update pas Cantina, i tried to go update by update. I seems like a compatibility issue, but is there anything else i can do without buying a new computer?? Please help!!

Apple is already up to M4-series chips in MacBook Pros and M3-series chips in MacBook Airs – and there are no Intel-based Macs anywhere in Apple's current new product line.
