Cannot load Apple News on iPad after IOS18 update

I seem to have fixed this by deleting Apple News and reinstalling it. It's working now. I did have to wait a while though. After relaunching it following reinstall it sat on the "Welcome to Apple News" logo for 2-3 minutes before finally allowing me to proceed and set up. But once that happened it's been fine. 🤷‍♂️

Followed advice from a user who suggested going to Setting/General/language and regions. Region showed “US”. Opened drop-down menu and selected “US” again.

A short time later the Apple News loaded and now seems to work.

I have this same problem and spoke with Apple Support about it. They indicated their engineers are aware of the issue and currently looking into it. If you haven’t already, report it through their feedback forms (Feedback - Apple News - Apple).

Hi. So I was on the phone first 3 hours with senior Apple support. Many iPads with iOS 18 and up cannot open Apple News. It is a glitch in the system. They are aware and trying to fix the issue. So iPad generation seven is still not working, and gen 8, some are working some or not.

Ok, I tried News on my sister's iPad (also a 7th gen and also running 18.2) connected to my Wi-Fi router and got exactly the same problem with News — stuck on "Loading" forever. Next I tried hotspotting my iPad to my iPhone's cellular connection, same problem. So it's not related to my Wi-Fi and not to my Apple ID or my iPad.

Yes my friend is definitely running 18.2 on her Air. Even the 3rd gen Air can run 18.2 (A12 chip, 4th gen has A14).

It's certainly starting to look like this may be a iPad 7th gen with 18.2 specific problem. You don't have to be subscribed to News+ either, I'm using the free tier of News.

same. interesting bug. which iPad are you on? I have 7 gen. which seems to be most of problem. is working on iMac and phone, just 7 gen iPad not. been in contact with support too. I had it start to load a couple of times. the region setting was an interesting solve. it tried to load after resetting that, but stopped. then I noticed it had tried to load at the same time, 10 pm? this morning tried it and it loaded fine, a little slow, but loaded all the way. so set back up, because I wiped it clean from history and saved. went to a different app, came back to news. everything is gone. not loading, in fact crashing completely, so deleted, reinstall. not loading. noticed some bugs on other things not just on iPad. iMac crashing? is it not working with AI? Apple might be busy. of course my equipment is a few years old, so maybe that is it. anyone with newer equip having problems?

Yes, I have been talking to support too. They want to think it is something wrong with iPads instead of something with update. Do all of us on here have news subscriptions? Is there anyone having this problem without a subscription? Some were in the new code they forgot to add the gen 7 iPad. It’s a shame since we are paying for this. I still get news on phone and iMac, but miss it on iPad. Give them a while longer. I actually like Flipboard form better, just won’t let you read everything or every article wants you to pay.

• Hey Dave, Did they update to 18.2? I didn’t think that old of an iPad would take 18.2. I would be interested if anyone with 8 gen or later was having problems, up to the new AI iPads. Support is still trying to work with me, but they are focused on my iPad when the problem is pointing to the 18.2 code or 7 gen chip (A10 Fusion chip with 64-bit architecture). I’m sure they have some old iPads laying around somewhere they can play with. Tried my books app. It seems to be working ok. Here’s a thought I might try. I’m an old beta tester. If 18.2 broke news, will 18.3 fix it? I see 18.3 beta is suppose to come out soon. I stopped beta testing because it was causing problems like this. Anyway, all we can do is hope they get it fixed.

I can access Apple News on my iPhone and Mac, only my iPad is affected by this bug so I'm able to wait until Apple sort it out (in iPadOS 18.2.x presumably). Hopefully this will be fixed sometime in January 🤞 If I was paying for News+ I'd be cancelling my subscription until it's fixed though.

I used to use Flipboard but I haven't used that in some time so I'm not sure what it's like today.

Gen 7. Same Problem with news… started with 18.1.1. Continues with 18.2. With any version of 18, the iPad seems to freeze from time to time, as well. Never going to upgrade so quickly again…especially given how painfull upgrades are…. Why is there no way to clear “system data”?

I’ve got the exact same issue (7th gen iPad, updated to OS 18.2.1 about a week ago): at first Apple News+ was loading fine (side note - apple+ subscription auto renewed late Dec 2024), but today, no news stories were loading. The logo was there, but no stories were populating. Just tried deleting/reinstalling the app, still the same.

My iPhone is synced with the iPad, has also been updated, but has had no loading issues at all.
