Stuck on iMovie Needed Permissions

I launched iMovie on my iPhone 16 Pro Max (running 18.1.1).  It prompted me for access to my Photo Library and music.  It already had Limited Access.  I did not change this.  It shows the “Needed Permissions” page.  When I click on the “Continue” button, the button fades but nothing happens after that.

I went to Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos > iMovie and changed this to “Full Access”.  I re-launched iMovie.  On the “Needed Permissions” page, “Photo Library Access” has a green check mark.  I tap “Continue”.  It fades and nothing happens after that.

I changed the access to “None”.  It’s still the same.

I powered off and powered on the iPhone and it’s still the same.  I restarted iPhone and it’s still the same.

I tried changing the settings at Settings > Apps > iMovie, but it’s still the same.

I updated to iOS 18.2.  Still stuck on “Needed Permissions”.

I have approximately 700GB of photos/videos.  I left the “Needed Permissions” page (after tapping “Continue”) in the foreground overnight.  Nothing happened.

How do I get past the “Needed Permissions” page?

Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy > Enter passcodes (device and screentime if you have it) > open iMovie again and give access as required.

Please ignore all other clever ideas as Allow/Disallow, green check, etc. does nothing. As of today (12/13) deleting the iMovie app and reloading it works perfectly. The problem occurs when you skip past the popup for music on the initial launch and there is no way to recover from it. Apple will fix it at some point, but dropping the app and reloading it (about 10 seconds for me) saved me from reading anymore less-than-helpful suggestions. :)

I shut down iMovie, went to Media & Apple Music>changed to Don’t Allow Changes> backed out > went in > changed to Allow Changes > backed out > went in > restarted iPhone > launched iMovie, got “Needed Permissions” which showed a green check mark for Photo Library Access, no mark for Music Access and “Continue” button.  I tap on the button, it fades and nothing else happens.

It would seem that the problem is that iMovie does not appear as a setting option in Media & Apple Music for me.  Am I correct to assume that this appears for you?

I could not find any general permission setting for Media & Apple Music.

This is happening based on Content & Privacy restrictions.

Go to Screen Time->Content & Privacy Restrictions->Media & Apple Music

Do Allow Changes and then you should be able to change iMovie option after Needed Permissions screen. Change back to Don’t Allow after.

Seems like you were already allowing Photo changes, but same process for whoever is encountering this issue.

If you see a Green Check Mark on either Photos or the Music icon, the app is happy with the settings. No check mark or an X on either one, this is restricting the iMovie from launching because it’s limited in its permissions). If you have 2 Green Check Marks, you won’t even see this screen. So from what I have said before and in this comment, focus on anything without a Green Check Mark.

Still think the app is being restricted some way in these permissions. No other recommendations other than temporarily giving full permission to both Photos (Allow->iMovie->Full Access) and Media & Apple Music (Allow->iMovie green switch to On) through Screen Time->Content & Privacy Restrictions I mentioned previously. You may need to go back after granting Full Access for this change to be saved and then change the Photo/Music option.

After you can successfully launch iMovie, you may select back to Don’t Allow which applies to Future Apps but will retain the settings you just set for apps now and previously gave permissions to.

If the app is open and you restrict the iMovie settings (Limited or No Access for Photos and turning the Green switch off for Music), the Need Permissions screen will pop back up.

Also, I am on an iPhone 15 Pro Max 17.7.2 and encountered the issue with iMovie after updating to 3.0.4, so perhaps there are other unknown bugs/issues with other iOS versions and hardware.

Thanks for your input.

According to this

https://search.brave.com/search?q=can+i+uninstall+imovie+fon+iphone%3F&source=ios&summary=1

We cannot uninstall iMovie because it’s a pre-installed app.  Have you used the reinstalled app and found no problems?  Did you lose any of your projects?

I had chatted with Apple support and they told me to reset locations and privacy, but I have settings for dozens and dozens of apps that I would need to manually put back.

I also have this issue and have checked everywhere mentioned. There is no ability to give Music Access, it does not exist anywhere in the settings.

Photos is checked.

Will not load and fades down due to Music access not checked.

There is no entry in Apps > iMovie relating to music, only photos.

iOS v.18.2 (22C152)

The only workaround was to delete the app and redownload (hopefully anything you did before you had saves elsewhere then in iMovie.

The permissions popped up as you went through the installation afresh.

Thank you!!!!!!! This worked for me. Critical because the "Delete the app and reinstall" was not an option. My daughter had a large project she spent hours on and I'm assuming deleting the app would have deleted all her work. phew.

(response to joelfromwollstonecraft: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy > Enter passcodes (device and screentime if you have it) > open iMovie again and give access as required.
