How to record streaming audio on MacBook Air M3?

How d o I do this? I am not a super user, just a basic user. I have paid for audio that forces me to be online to listen to it, and I want it on my computer. The only way I can record it is while it is streaming, and I want to record the digital stream, not the output from speakers. TY.

You would need a 3rd party application that acts as an audio device which intercepts and records the stream.

Those used to be common back in the day, but have largely fallen out of favor, not least because they are not entirely legal.

If the service you are subscribed to does not license the material for recording or local storage, you can’t legally record it.

I don't want to start an argument here, but it entirely depends on which country they are in. for example, up here in Canada, if digital content is available to us, we can record that content for "private study" regardless of any prohibition by the service provider's countries laws. the streaming service could of course block access to Canadians, (and many do) but we have laws in place that allow us to legally get around "geo-locked" content as well. but those laws are only available to persons physically located within Canada.

In the US, federal copyright laws have primary authority and are uniform across all states. Some states have limited additional copyright laws mostly pertaining to state government records because federal legislation is not entirely clear about state records.

More to the point of the OP's situation, copyright & "fair use" are not the issues. The issue is that most if not all streaming services' Terms & Conditions (user contract/license terms) do not allow copying or recording of their material.

You seem to misunderstand what you 'purchased'. You did not purchase the media. You purchased a subscription which gives you a license to stream the media.

Some streaming services offer the ability to download content so that you can access it when you are not connected to the Internet. Some do not.

The license you purchased is also limited in that when your subscription lapses or expires, you no longer have a legal right to the media at all.

This is not the same as purchasing a CD, tape, or other physical media. This this does not suit your needs, then a subscription to a streaming service is not right for you.
