just received a brand new MacBook Air 2017 from my brother. On the keyboard, I see there are 4 Command keys, but only the 2 outer Command keys work, while the 2 inner ones do not. Now, how can I set them up to make them functional?
The two keys I circled do not perform their function when pressed.

PS The two keys you circled, which are supposed to have Japanese printed on the instead of "Command", are for special uses when typing Japanese. The left one, called Eisu, is used to shift between English and Japanese characters, while the right one, called Kana, is used to shift between different kinds of Japanese characters.
They do not have any function when not using the Japanese input method, but I think there are 3rd party apps which can be used to reprogram them if you want.

You have a non-standard Japanese keyboard which someone has put into your machine. Ask your brother how it got there and how it is supposed to work. Below is a picture of what a real apple Japanese keyboard looks like:
Yes, I just double-checked, and it turns out that those two keys indeed switch between English and Japanese input. However, since I never use Japanese, I wonder if there’s a way to assign those two keys to a different task instead. If it’s possible, could you guide me on how to do it? You need to ask in forums for apps like Karabiner Elements and Better Touch Tool. Sorry, I don’t have any info on this kind of key reprogramming.
