Read out loud goes to Home Screen

When i updated my iPhone 14 Pro Max to 18.1.1 my iPhone goes to the home screen when i tap speak on selected sections. My iPad works perfectly fine. I have tried to restart the iPhone by turning it off and doing a hard restart, i have chatted with tech support, i have been on the phone with tech support and we did a remote session, I have confirmed it’s not a hardware issue. I also went to my local Apple Store for tech support and again confirmed it is a software issue. I was told to wait for the next update. I now have 18.2 and still the same issue. I do not need to have an entire screen, i only need to use this feature for specific sections due to a disability. The only thing I have not tried is a complete reset, and I was advised that could be a 50/50 chance of fixing this. Can anyone please help?

Also, all my settings are correct and verified. I select a passage and tap the speak button, then the screen shuts down and I am back at the Home Screen. This occurs with websites, emails, pdf’s. Literally every time I make a selection to be read aloud. The Speak Screen option works fine however I don’t want an entire screen read aloud.

jemorse ~ A custom shortcut may be a workaround, but it's an extra tap:

Select text to speak > Swipe left > Share… > Speak Selection

Tap this iCloud link to add the shortcut to Apple's Shortcuts app:
